<p>Reductions in malaria cases have stalled after several years of decline globally, according to the new World malaria report 2018<em>. </em>To get the reduction in malaria deaths and disease back on track, WHO and partners are joining a new country-led response, launched today, to scale up prevention and treatment, and increased investment, to protect vulnerable people from the deadly disease.</p>
<p>For the second consecutive year, the annual report produced by WHO reveals a plateauing in numbers of people affected by malaria: in 2017, there were an estimated 219 million cases of malaria, compared to 217 million the year before. But in the years prior, the number of people contracting malaria globally had been steadily falling, from 239 million in 2010 to 214 million in 2015.</p>
<p>“Nobody should die from malaria. But the world faces a new reality: as progress stagnates, we are at risk of squandering years of toil, investment and success in reducing the number of people suffering from the disease,” says Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. “We recognise we have to do something different – now. So today we are launching a country-focused and -led plan to take comprehensive action against malaria by making our work more effective where it counts most – at local level.”</p>
<h2>Where malaria is hitting hardest</h2>
<p>In 2017, approximately 70% of all malaria cases (151 million) and deaths (274 000) were concentrated in 11 countries: 10 in Africa (Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Uganda and United Republic of Tanzania) and India. There were 3.5 million more malaria cases reported in these 10 African countries in 2017 compared to the previous year, while India, however, showed progress in reducing its disease burden.</p>
<p>Despite marginal increases in recent years in the distribution and use of insecticide-treated bed nets in sub-Saharan Africa – the primary tool for preventing malaria – the report highlights major coverage gaps. In 2017, an estimated half of at-risk people in Africa did not sleep under a treated net. Also, fewer homes are being protected by indoor residual spraying than before, and access to preventive therapies that protect pregnant women and children from malaria remains too low.</p>

<h2>High impact response needed</h2>
<p>In line with WHO’s strategic vision to scale up activities to protect people’s health, the new country-driven “High burden to high impact” response plan has been launched to support nations with most malaria cases and deaths. The response follows a call made by Dr Tedros at the World Health Assembly in May 2018 for an aggressive new approach to jump-start progress against malaria. It is based on four pillars:</p>
<ul>
<li>Galvanizing national and global political attention to reduce malaria deaths;</li>
<li>Driving impact through the strategic use of information;</li>
<li>Establishing best global guidance, policies and strategies suitable for all malaria endemic countries; and</li>
<li>Implementing a coordinated country response.</li>
</ul>
<p>Catalyzed by WHO and the RBM Partnership to End Malaria, “High burden to high impact” builds on the principle that no one should die from a disease that can be easily prevented and diagnosed, and that is entirely curable with available treatments.</p>
<p>“There is no standing still with malaria. The latest World malaria report shows that further progress is not inevitable and that business as usual is no longer an option,” said Dr Kesete Admasu, CEO of the RBM Partnership. “The new country-led response will jumpstart aggressive new malaria control efforts in the highest burden countries and will be crucial to get back on track with fighting one of the most pressing health challenges we face.”</p>
<p>Targets set by the <em>WHO G</em><em>lobal technical strategy for malaria 2016–2030</em> to reduce malaria case incidence and death rates by at least 40% by 2020 are not on track to being met.</p>
<h2>Pockets of progress</h2>
<p>The report highlights some positive progress. The number of countries nearing elimination continues to grow (46 in 2017 compared to 37 in 2010). Meanwhile in China and El Salvador, where malaria had long been endemic, no local transmission of malaria was reported in 2017, proof that intensive, country-led control efforts can succeed in reducing the risk people face from the disease.</p>
<p>In 2018, WHO certified Paraguay as malaria free, the first country in the Americas to receive this status in 45 years. Three other countries – Algeria, Argentina and Uzbekistan – have requested official malaria-free certification from WHO.</p>
<p>India – a country that represents 4% of the global malaria burden – recorded a 24% reduction in cases in 2017 compared to 2016. Also in Rwanda, 436 000 fewer cases were recorded in 2017 compared to 2016. Ethiopia and Pakistan both had estimated decreases of more than 240 000 in the same period.</p>
<p>“When countries prioritize action on malaria, we see the results in lives saved and cases reduced,” says Dr Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa. “WHO and global malaria control partners will continue striving to help governments, especially those with the highest burden, scale up the response to malaria.”</p>
<h2>Domestic financing is key</h2>
<p>As reductions in malaria cases and deaths slow, funding for the global response has also shown a levelling off, with US$ 3.1 billion made available for control and elimination programmes in 2017 including US$ 900 million (28%) from governments of malaria endemic countries. The United States of America remains the largest single international donor, contributing US$ 1.2 billion (39%) in 2017.</p>
<p>To meet the 2030 targets of the global malaria strategy, malaria investments should reach at least US$6.6 billion annually by 2020 – more than double the amount available today.</p>

The last 9 months have been a whirlwind of practical work. Casting mortars, curing them, crushing them, then exploring their microstructure in a multitude of ways. And, in parallel, a second flood cycle out at the BRP Hive: monitoring drying, dissembling walls and sorting retrieved samples.</p>
<p>But then it stopped. This month I’ve gone from days dashing between labs to sitting at a desk: Working back through data, updating analyses, linking the various findings and drawing out themes for the thesis. And with the change of pace, comes an opportunity – and a need – to find other activities. Perhaps an advantage of doing a doctorate as a mature student with children is that they don't just let you sit at your desk. Each year, I have watched the Bath Children’s Literature Festival come and go. But this year we actually went – my son stepping up to the mark to select his preferred events, and ensure I booked them; making sure that I took a break and thought about something different – or at least that is what we assumed the day would do!</p>

And there were a fair few tips in there that I’ll be using too – starting with drawing out a map to complete the journey from thoughts to thesis.</p>
<p>A gap between sessions allowed us time to check out the recently reopenedSky Blue Café beneath the Chapel Arts Centre - highly recommended and you really can see blue skies despite the basement setting 🙂 Then there was a quick canter up to campus to transfer data files before returning to The Guildhall. I think last time I was there was to be presented with my Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award sometime last century!</p>
<p>For his second talk, my son had chosen Chris Riddell on illustrating <em>The Tales of Beedle the Bard.</em> Well I say “talk” but it was more an hour of drawing with auditory annotation! And, again, here was a speaker taking their audience seriously; not just introducing them to the characters but to the process of writing, sharing recollections from his childhood along with more recent anecdotes about the publishing process and how he set about producing his work. <p>We were delighted to invite Saskia Walcott from Walcott Communications back to the University on Thursday 28<sup>th</sup> June 2018 to take part in our 'Lunch with Impact' event. During her visit, Saskia shared her insight and expertise into compiling and writing REF Impact Case Studies with attendees. Saskia was joined by 18 members of staff across the university including School of Management, Biological Sciences, Computer Science, Sport Science and Exercise and professional services to take part in a participatory workshop.</p>

<p><strong>Key messages</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Importance of being able to tell your story so that it is accessible to your intended audience</li>
<li>Set out the context (problem), the journey your research took (mechanisms) and the difference you made (Impact/outcomes) covering the 5W – who, why, what, when, where</li>
<li>Be specific as possible</li>
<li>Evidence your impact and make it easy to access – include quotes and extracts in your ICS</li>
<li>Look at the REF 2014 Impact Case Study database for examples</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>So what does good look like?</strong></p>
<p>For a good impact case study you need to have a strong narrative, be able to tell the story of how your research has made a difference. You need to know who your audience is. You may need to consider four key audiences when developing your ICS, primarily: Assessors (REF panel members) and members of the Public / Lay reviewers; and secondly, Funders and Universities. Ultimately, your story needs to be understood by an informed lay audience i.e. they may be from your disciplinary background but may not necessarily be an expert in your area of research. Therefore avoid highly technical language and acronyms, make it accessible as possible.</p>
<p>A good impact case study would start by setting out the context for the research, covering what problem it was trying to address, how the research addressed that problem and the difference it made. It would weave in the reach and significance of this difference providing evidence to support this claim. This evidence would be easy for the reviewers to obtain, with quotes from testimonials and reports being used within the case study. The narrative would be confident and committed with those that scored well tending to use words like “resulted in” or “led to” with evidence to substantiate.</p>
<p>Saskia set out her seven elements for writing a 'good' impact case study as follows:</p>
<ol>
<li>Articulate the impact of the research</li>
<li>Explain why the impact was important</li>
<li>Understand the story you want to tell</li>
<li>Outline what the research and significance of your research is</li>
<li>Evidence your impact</li>
<li>Explain your journey</li>
<li>Seek feedback</li>
</ol>
<p>So when you are starting to complete the Impact Case Study Template sections in detail, consider the following:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Title:</strong> The trick here is to use the Ronseal philosophy – What would it say on the tin? It needs to inform the reader about the story you are going to give focusing on the ending – the impact.</li>
<li><strong>Summary:</strong> Address the 5W (Why, What, When, Where, Who), be specific, make sure you have covered the problem, solution (research) and difference it has made (Impact).</li>
<li><strong>Underpinning research:</strong> Need to show the research meets the 2* threshold (leaving no doubt in the reviewers minds) and how the research contributed to the impact. Include the context, what is the current situation or practice, and what has improved. Words such as “Ground breaking”, “Unique” or “New” are powerful.</li>
<li><strong>Detailing the impact:</strong> Start with the Impact (Outcomes) then focus on the story (mechanisms) within a specific context. Demonstrate both the reach and significance of your research and be a specific as possible. Include evidence of your claims and extract information from testimonials and documents to include within the ICS text (so that assessors do not need to go looking for it). Make sure you use multiple sources of evidence, using a mixture of quantitative and qualitative data. Consider using images as they can be powerful.</li>
</ul>

<p class="text en The EU has agreed with the following options: </p> <p class=" text="" en="" a)="" if="" may="" can="" get="" her="" twice-rejected="" deal="" through="" when="" she="" takes="" it="" back="" for="" a="" third="" "meaningful"="" vote="" to="" the="" commons="" this="" coming="" week,="" eu="" will="" allow="" an="" extension="" brexit="" until="" 22="" so="" that="" britain="" procedures="" and="" legislation="" in="" place="" order="" leave.<=""> </p>
<p class="text en b) If her deal is rejected for the third time this week, Mrs May will be forced to instigate Brexit on April 12, either with a new deal, or no-deal. </p> <p class=" text="" en="" c)="" revoke="" article="" 50="" altogether="" (ie="" reject="" brexit,="" and="" remain="" in="" the="" eu). <=""> </p>

The EU, in seizing control from the British Prime Minister, has effectively removed May from the game as a meaningful player!</p> <p class=" text="" en="" the="" game="" has="" now="" effectively="" become="" a="" two-player="" game,="" being="" played="" out="" directly="" between="" britain="" and="" eu,="" without="" any="" meaningful="" impact="" from="" may="" anymore!="" prospect="" for="" deal="" been="" strengthened="" as="" alternative="" (crashing="" with="" no="" deal)="" becomes="" stronger="" due="" to="" "red="" line"="" of="" european="" elections="" on="" 23="" creating="" bargaining="" pressure.<=""> </p>
<p class="text en But has this really strengthened the prospect for May's deal? Game theorists must consider all of the potential options in the game. An interesting outcome of all of these political wrangling and maneuverings over the last months is the strengthening emergence of a political will among the British people, beyond the official institutions of Parliament. This group has just placed an online petition for Brexit to be stopped on the website: the " revoke="" article="" 50"="" petition.="" in="" its="" first="" two="" days,="" it="" already="" has="" four="" million="" signatures!="" according="" to="" metro="" online,="" this="" is="" a="" record="" level="" of="" sign-ups="" for="" any="" online="" may="" said="" that="" she="" will="" not="" countenance="" revoking="" 50="" (which="" would="" stop="" brexit).="" however,="" as="" the="" points="" out,="" number="" signatures="" exceeds="" 100,="" 000,="" threshold="" required="" be="" debated="" parliament.<=""> </p>
