A Bullet Journal is like The One Ring - 31 Aug 2019 07:19

Jamie Todd Rubin on his Bullet Journal:

Almost at once, I saw exactly where a Bullet Journal would fill a desperately needed gap: the One Book to Rule Them All.

Jamie gives us a history of his notebook usage before showing us how a Bullet Journal fills the holes he kept finding in his day. A seemingly Bullet Journal shaped hole.

I currently have my Bullet Journal, but if I’m heading out the door and want to go light I’ll grab a Field Notes book to act as a way to grab anything that’s needed. I quick grocery list will end up here if I’m heading out to get groceries because the whole Bullet Journal is just cumbersome to wrangle on a shopping cart.

My other notebook is my reading notebook. All my book notes start here, then migrate to digital places and end up in reviews.

If you’re wondering why I’d choose a notebook over software, title="Why I Use a Bullet Journal Instead of Productivity Software I wrote about that. Maybe the biggest reason is that title="GTD Review can be Easy and Fast by default a notebook says no to a task. If you don’t decide to move it forward in a book, or to a new notebook, it doesn’t hang around bugging you.

The Cookbook Project: Recipe 7 - Chicken with Cashews - 28 Aug 2019 04:07

Tags:

After a three-ish year hiatus, I'm bringing back target="_blank The Cookbook Project! Some of you may remember that I was all gung-ho on making a recipe from every single, solitary cookbook in my arsenal. I got about six into it and then, well, I guess my enthusiasm dwindled (read: died). So, here I am again, in a new year, hoping to finish things that I have started. Or at least make some stellar progress.

I've made a few tweaks to the program. The books have a new home so I won't be going in any particular order and I will be providing the recipes. (Not sure why I didn't before…hmm, lazy? Uh, yes.) Here's the target="_blank original post about the project to get you back up to speed. Enjoy!

<div class="separator" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; <img border=" imageanchor="1" 0"="" height="302" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-kkq7UdEj8GE/UP61bwGoalI/AAAAAAAABTY/5J3EYZ790CM/s320/TCP7_1.jpg" width="320">
]

<div class="separator" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; <img border=" imageanchor="1" 0"="" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TGiPo_M5jZQ/UP61b77B6MI/AAAAAAAABTg/3B0v6sY1aeE/s320/TCP7_2.jpg" width="320">
]

Book:
Fresh Thai

Author: Oi Cheepchaiissara

Recipe: Chicken with cashews

Page: 94

Came from: Williams-Sonoma, was on super-sale, thought it would be a challenge to try some Thai cooking.

Why this recipe: Wanted to use our wok and it has cashews. Love cashews!

Technique: Wok-cooking. (Still trying to get the hang of this one.)

Process: Very simple. The key is to get everything prepared beforehand. Cooks fairly quickly.

<div class="separator" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; <img border=" imageanchor="1" 0"="" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AqprwmLNwQ4/UP7mFcho9hI/AAAAAAAABUk/WElaArd9fjc/s320/TCP7_5.jpg" width="320">
]
<div class="separator" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; <img border=" 0"="" height="233" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tKZgI9beDks/UP63p2RSqxI/AAAAAAAABT4/EyByEyZAdVk/s320/TCP7_4.jpg" width="320">
]

Outcome: Definitely tasty, but needed a bit more zing or tang or something. A good, basic wok recipe which you can modify to your own tastes. I served it over jasmine rice. Oh, and the onions were a bit too chunky. I would cut them into strips next time.

<div class="separator" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; <img border=" imageanchor="1" 0"="" height="256" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-r-J_VXSZIJI/UP65eTuY78I/AAAAAAAABUQ/DEEKpH9xvEU/s320/TCP7_3.jpg" width="320">
]

Make again? For sure.

Why isn’t Big Tobacco paying its way? - 22 Aug 2019 05:27

Tags:

It is well known that some of the world’s biggest technical companies pay pitiful amounts of corporate tax. Now our new research has placed the tax returns of tobacco firms under the spotlight.

Despite the enormous harm they cause, and the massive profits they earn, it turns out that multinational tobacco companies pay almost no corporation tax in the UK. Given the deficit in NHS funding, this should spur the government into action.

Our work, supported by Cancer Research UK, drew on publicly available data from 2009 to 2016, a period when corporation tax rates varied between 20% and 28%. It showed that the four tobacco multinationals operating in the UK – two of which have British headquarters – are not paying corporation tax at anything like this rate.

For example, for four of these years British American Tobacco (BAT) paid absolutely no corporation tax and negligible amounts in the other years. Imperial Brands paid, at most, an effective rate of 13% – often much lower – and even received tax credits of up to £112m in some years.

In 2016, Imperial, BAT and Gallagher (Japan Tobacco International’s UK subsidiary) together made UK operating profits in excess of £1 billion – yet paid only £83.6m in corporation tax, a fraction of what might be expected.

No doubt they ensure this is legal, but it cannot be right. These are some of the world’s most profitable companies. They sell a highly addictive product that kills two out of three long-term users, imposing enormous suffering and costs on smokers, their families and society as a whole.

According to recent government analysis, the cost of smoking to the economy was £11bn in 2017 in England alone. Tobacco excise duties generated £9.5bn in the UK that year, leaving a deficit of at least £1.5bn – a deficit barely touched by the negligible corporation taxes paid.

Our research highlights some underpinning problems. First, the whole reporting system for corporation tax and company accounts in the UK is inadequate. It’s almost impossible to know exactly how much corporation tax is due because companies don’t have to report the profits they earn in the UK, nor offer full details of how their corporation tax payments have been calculated.

Second, like many other businesses, tobacco companies have clearly reorganised corporate structures to enable profits to be shifted overseas.

The bigger picture – the market failure causing the rot at the heart of our public health system and our NHS funding crisis – is more alarming still. It is the products of major corporations – not just tobacco, but highly processed foods, sugary drinks, and alcohol – that are the major causes of death and illness in the UK, and indeed globally.

Yet the profit-seeking companies producing these products remain incentivised to cause great harm, because the costs of that harm are offloaded on to others. Until the real costs of selling those products are factored into those companies’ bottom lines, the rot will continue and tax payers will pick up the tab.

<span class="source" attribution="" <a="" href="https://www.shutterstock.com/image-photo/burning-cigarette-smoke-on-black-background-173384390 Shutterstock]

Instead, corporations must be made to bear the costs of the harm they cause. A first step is to mandate more robust country by country reporting of tax and profits so that companies can no longer draw on their vast resources to play the system.

A simple second step would be to impose a corporation tax surcharge on companies whose products are damaging to health, to ensure they start to pay for the harm they cause. An 8% corporation tax surcharge is currently imposed on banks in the UK. This could simply be extended to other companies.

Increasing taxes on harmful products such as tobacco and alcohol excise duties, and the recent tax on sugary drinks, also plays a vital role in reducing consumption of those products while raising government revenues – a win-win situation. The fact that tobacco duties in the UK (among the highest in the world) only partially meet the true costs of tobacco shows how far we may need to go.

A new proposal to force tobacco firms to pay a levy which will fund efforts to help smokers quit is to be welcomed. While this is unlikely to change the industry’s profit making – as it will be passed on to smokers in the form of higher prices – it would deter smoking while raising much needed revenue.

Price cap systems have also been proposed and have the advantage that they would reduce the perverse profit incentives these companies have while also raising government revenue. In these systems the prices companies can charge on potentially health-damaging products is capped, reducing the profits from those products, but the cost the consumer faces does not drop because a higher excise duty would replace the foregone profits.

The public must make it clear it no longer wants to pay for the harms that these companies cause, and the government must urgently grasp this issue. This will require them to reject the self-interested overtures of the think-tanks promoting tax cuts and claims about their impacts, including that high excise duties are the primary driver of tobacco smuggling.

It is entirely unacceptable that enormously profitable companies are not paying for the harm they cause. Until they are, they remain incentivised to keep selling and promoting their health damaging products to the detriment of individual and global health.

Source: https://theconversation.com/smoking-costs-society-dear-so-why-isnt-big-tobacco-paying-its-way-112327
[[image https://bathline-bathrooms.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/kohler-lifestyle-bathroom.png">

Do Family Interventions for Psychosis Translate in Chin - 06 Aug 2019 07:52

A study published in the Community Mental Health Journal examines the potential application of family interventions for psychosis (FIP) within a Chinese context. The study’s researchers, led by Dr. Jeremy Dixon of the University of Bath’s Centre for Analysis of Social Policy, investigated Chinese mental health service managers’ views of FIP and found that FIP must be modified in a number of ways if it is to be implemented in China. Recommended changes include embracing cultural values of interdependence by supporting client recovery within the family home, and recognizing the influential role stigma and families’ need to “save face” would likely play in Chinese family-oriented mental health care.

<blockquote readability="7
“Family Interventions in Psychosis (FIP) have been promoted internationally but have been criticized for being based on western cultural models,” Dixon writes.

<figure id=" attachment_166169"="" class="wp-caption aligncenter [https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:1_xian_muslim_quarter_china_2011.JPG" onclick="gaTracker('send', 'event', 'outbound-article', 'https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:1_xian_muslim_quarter_china_2011.JPG', ''); <img class=" size-large="" wp-image-166169"="" src="https://www.madinamerica.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/1_xian_muslim_quarter_china_2011-1024x681.jpg" alt="" width="640" height="426" srcset="https://www.madinamerica.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/1_xian_muslim_quarter_china_2011-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https://www.madinamerica.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/1_xian_muslim_quarter_china_2011-150x100.jpg 150w, https://www.madinamerica.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/1_xian_muslim_quarter_china_2011-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.madinamerica.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/1_xian_muslim_quarter_china_2011-768x511.jpg 768w, https://www.madinamerica.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/1_xian_muslim_quarter_china_2011-500x333.jpg 500w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px">
]

Families, therefore, expected mental health workers to connect them with government financial assistance. Given that FIP typically seeks to “engage with families through addressing their presenting concerns,” the researchers suggest that FIP would need to be linked to “financial problem-solving” to be relevant in a Chinese cultural context.

Other themes that emerged concerned aspects of Chinese family dynamics that would be important to consider when implementing FIP cross-culturally. These included the presence of “key decision makers” within families to whom all other members defer; the tendency for families to present a “united front” to the community in order to maintain “family harmony” and defend against the cultural stigma of psychosis; and an emphasis on interdependence, which the researchers suggest points to the need for in-home recovery.

Given deference to authority within families and family members’ views that relatives with psychosis are “handicapped,” the authors suggest that Chinese FIP implementation should focus on education and intervention with family “carers” first before bringing service users into sessions. This approach stands in contrast with Western FIP models, which “promote the expertise of the person with psychosis.”

Limitations of the study include the fact that it was a pilot study and therefore had a small sample size; its lack of rural and other regional perspectives; and its focus on the experiences of mental health managers versus service users and their families. In closing, the authors conclude that FIP’s possible use within China’s expanding community mental health services holds promise:
<blockquote readability=" 6="" <p="">
“FIP can offer an effective way to provide community support in a culture which as always placed emphasis on the centrality of family.”

However, FIP is not one-size-fits-all, and as such must be adapted to the nuances of Chinese culture in order to be useful in this environment. Also, “the evolving nature of family” within China’s ever-changing cultural terrain must be thoughtfully considered.
