We are seeking an experienced, capable and conscientious individual to lead technical delivery at our campus venues; The Edge and Andrew Brownsword Gallery. Working to the instruction of the Programme & Exhibitions Manager and Building Manager, you will lead the technical realisation, maintenance, supervision and safe operation of exhibitions and events and venue use for commercial purpose liaising with artists and representatives and ensuring confidence on matters of technical delivery.It is an exciting time for The Edge and Andrew Brownsword Gallery as we develop an arts and science brand for public engagement purposes, and this new role will underpin realisation by supporting a variety of delivery needs in the gallery, studio theatre, main theatre, venue project areas, rehearsal rooms and occasionally offsite. The Lead Technician also instructs and deploys casual technicians to requisite safety standards and assists in recruitment and rota’ing. HOW TO SET UP LIVING ROOM?
A living room is the stage of a home. They display the attitude, culture, and way of living of the people in the home. This stage is where we invite guests and spend our time with the family. Family values are the utmost need of the day and it happens only in the living room. Living rooms make our life relaxed and happy. Bedrooms may be for dreams but living rooms are for memories for a lifetime. The living room which is the meeting room of the family is meant for meaningful discussions for the betterment and wellbeing of the family. Any elephant in the room of a family could be sorted out in the living rooms. The search over the world ends for anyone in his living room.
   Basics of the living room: Living rooms should be cosy enough but also with living conditions. A theme of the family's liking can be incorporated in the setting up of living room with furniture, windows, curtains, wallpapers, floor rugs, lighting and many more to bring in luxury and necessity
  Ventilation: The living room should be constructed with the proper ventilation. Today's air pollution and environmental hazards could bring in various illness can be avoided with proper windows which provide fresh air.  Also, the view of the living room should be focused on mother nature. Nature is where everyone especially children could learn new things every day.
  Curtains: The coloring of the living room which should be pleasing for the views should match with the curtains which could bring in the necessary ambience in the living room. Curtains should be of excellent quality and taste.  With the technological development, there are assorted options for curtains to choose from as per the taste of the family members especially the kids.
 Lighting: The lighting in the living room is very essential to bright up the evenings in the minds of family members. A full day hectic activity in school or office ends in the living room.  An electric, radiant and vibrant lighting could give in the comfort of relaxing and happy.  With the availability of various kinds of lights with assorted colors and models, care should be taken to choose the right lighting for the living room for wonderful evenings and morning all through the life.
 Furniture: Furniture provides the facelift and space allocation of the living room where most of the living happens. Furniture could be contemporary or traditional, but it should suit to the needs, space of the room and above all to the likings of the residents living in the home. Innovative ideas for furnishing within the budget is the key to a wonderful living room. The furniture could be arranged accordingly to give in space, comfort, and luxury.
Arranging a great room: Whatever is the space of your living room it could be arranged with furniture to its best. The focal point of the effective arrangement should be the French doors. The French window which is casement windows to the floor level is the key to any living room. If homes without French doors fireplace or any good ventilated window could be the cornerstone of the living room design.
Symmetrical furniture arrangements: Furniture should be arranged symmetrically to give a better view and space. The face to face conversations and space to accommodate not only the family members but also the guests in a proper way is provided by symmetrical arrangement. An L shape is a common arrangement with chairs to help in need.
 Diagonal furniture arrangement: Diagonal arrangement of the room gives the boxy look of a luxury hotel lounge. This also provides extra space in the living room with a welcoming pathway. The sofa and coffee table could be arranged accordingly to establish a diagonal axis and the additional seating also on the same axis. The floor rug is to align accordingly with the focal point to provide a diagonal arrangement.
Furniture to divide living room: Furniture could be arranged to divide the room for activity zones like eating, gaming, snoozing, watching TV and many more. The furniture should be selected accordingly as per the space available in the living room for this purpose. The arrangement should be done innovatively for providing space for these activity zones.
Wallpapers: Wallpapers of usual colors and with images of nature or as per the choice of the family or quotes and inspirational writings could be used to make living in the room happy and creative. These could be changed from time to time as per the situation in the family.
Things in the living room only make living better but to live better it is necessary to have an ever learning and present, happy mind.

Even craft-challenged moms like me could have success in using a pen to trace their sweet little hands on construction paper. Then together we would adorn the paper fingers with feathers and the thumb with a candy corn beak and black licorice hat. Draw in some feet and—voila—it’s a perfect turkey.
As the kids get older they soon learn to trace their own hands and the designs that could be made from a traced hand seem endless. Whether it was macaroni shells or dried beans or watercolor paints the end result was always original and somewhat of an adventure in creativity to achieve a satisfying result.
Kids eventually outgrow turkey crafts but really our job of tracing hands remains a vital one. Not physically, but spiritually.  We have the privilege of helping them to learn to trace the hand of God working in their lives.
The clues are already present and we can help our kids look back over the events of their lives and see patterns in what God has done in order to help them make future decisions. For example, my older son and I were talking about spiritual gifts and he was thoroughly confused about his. I said, “Look back over the last four years of your life. God has placed you in numerous leadership positions at church and school. You don’t seek it out but leadership roles seem to find you. That’s the hand of God preparing you for what is to come.”  When someone reminds us of the big picture, traces of God’s work are visible. It helped him to relax into the unknown of what God is presently doing in his life. Like the story of Joseph, things make a lot more sense in hind sight!
Another way to help kids see God at work in their lives is to share with them ways God has protected them. First Peter 1:5 tells us that we are being shielded by God’s power because of our faith. One translation uses the word guarded instead of shielded. When Luke was very young he had to participate in a piano recital. He was so afraid because he didn’t know any of the other kids and parents were not allowed. So I prayed. I asked God to allow him to feel the comforting presence of an angel. When he came home he said, “Things went okay. I felt like I was being guarded by an angel.” He had no idea what I had prayed! But God did.
Tracing the hand of God for and with our kids helps them develop trust and gratitude for what God is doing in their lives. The God whose hand we trace is the same God who takes us by the hand and keeps us (Isaiah 42:6). It is His hand that leads us and His right hand that holds us (Psalm 139:10).

New research highlights ethnic split in university choi - 12 Jul 2019 04:01

A new study from researchers in our Department of Education, published in the journal Population, Space and Place, explores how the ethnic composition of where students grow up is linked to where they attend university. 
Using detailed administrative data on all 412,000 students attending university in the UK from 2014-2015, combined with spatial census data from 2011, the researchers including Dr Sol Gamsu and Dr Michael Donnelly, calculated a "diversity score" for every UK university, which was then compared with the ethnic diversity of the surrounding area. 
These scores allowed for an analysis of factors influencing whether students move towards more or less ethnically diverse universities than where they have grown up. Their results suggested that that white students are more likely to move towards a university that is more diverse than their home neighbourhood, whereas ethnic minority students tend to stay at universities that have a similar level of diversity to where they have grown up. 
They suggest that these contrasting tendencies may shed light on how race is experienced in contemporary university life.
Lead researcher, Dr Sol Gamsu explained: "This research highlights the huge differences between UK universities in terms of the ethnic diversity of these universities. It shows how elite universities in large cities often do not reflect their ethnically diverse surroundings in their largely white student intake." 
"This research also explores how the ethnic diversity of where students grow up is linked to the ethnic diversity of the university they attend." 
Dr Michael Donnelly added: “Our research suggests that universities should think about the ethnic mix of their intakes and the kinds of interactions and encounters they are making possible. Creating a more tolerant society depends to some degree on building knowledge and awareness of difference early on in people’s lives through positive encounters. Universities have the potential to be key spaces for this to happen, and we call on them to think beyond access, and to address important questions of mixing within their institution.
The work here on ethnicity builds on a policy brief from the researchers looking at ethnic diversity in higher education published by the University’s Institute for Policy Research (IPR) in summer 2017 ‘Diverse Places of Learning?’. 
It was carried out as part of a wider research agenda addressing the geographies of higher education, led by Dr Michael Donnelly from the University and funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). 
This wider programme of work has involved quantitative analysis of large-scale data-sets as well as intensive qualitative fieldwork with over 200 young people from 20 different geographic locations in the UK. The work aims to contribute an important geographic perspective to contemporary debates about social mobility and inequality within higher education.

Make a movie plan
Your home movie needs to be adorable and pay much attention to the content. And when you shoot the videos, take the plan into consideration. By doing this, you can make your home movie more meaningful.
Keep your movie short
I think the biggest flaw with most home movies is that they’re too damn long. Think about how long you’re interested in watching a video clip of your kids. Cut that in half for grandparents, half again for aunts and uncles and another half for everyone else. While I’ve sometimes broken this rule myself, I think most videos should be two to three minutes, tops.
Keep your clips short
If you’re wondering how to jam all that great footage into just a two-minute video, the solution is to trim the clips you’re using to the bare minimum. Especially with younger kids, the cute thing they’re doing is often quite repetitive — dancing in circles, getting covered in spaghetti, playing with the dog. Trim the clip down to just the best two or three seconds. Chances are that’s sufficient to give the viewer the sense of what’s going on. And a bunch of short clips will give your movie a lot more momentum than a few long ones.
Add music
A home movie with a soundtrack is a lot more fun to watch than one without it unless the footage has its own great audio (like your kid’s piano recital). Picking music for your home movie can be a bit tough, though. Once you start paying attention, you’ll be amazed how many songs out there are about sex, drugs, death — or something else that won’t really seem appropriate overlaid with footage of your toddler learning to walk. Another point to keep in mind: Try not to use the entire length of a song in your video. If you do, Facebook or YouTube’s algorithms might delete your video for copyright infringement. For some reason, using one- or two-minute segments of songs doesn’t get your video red-flagged, but using the whole song does.
Combine photos and videos together
Make your home video more advanced by inserting some still photos to the videos or use some advanced video effects. They will surely make your video more interesting. But if you’ve got a handful of great photos that you think to go with your movie, throw them into the mix. In my experience, it’s best to clump photos together at the beginning of your movie or in the middle. Sprinkling them throughout the movie can be distracting.
Avoid crazy visual effects
Video editing software also users the option of using all sorts of weird effects on their clips — from sepia tones to doing weird things to the color saturation. These effects are even more distracting than bad transitions. Don’t use them.
Get some humor
Add some humor to your home videos to bring them into the next level instantly. Successful TV commercials have good humor and make people happy. You can search for some funny video online and find some inspirations from them on how to make the video funny and attractive.
Give your movie a title
This might seem obvious. Given that we generally share movies through Facebook and YouTube, which have their own titles, this may seem unnecessary. But it’s helpful to remind people what your home movie is about (“Christmas at Gramma’s 2018!”) and will be particularly helpful if you put a bunch of videos on DVD. But I’ve seen a lot of home movies without a title card.
