The Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) team, based in the Centre for Learning and Teaching (CLT), is looking for a dynamic, positive Learning Technologist with a focus on STEM. The post holder will join our dedicated team in helping with the development of our Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) support and project work. It is an exciting time to join the University as we embark on an ambitious programme of Curriculum Development; the post holder will play an active part in ensuring that our STEM subjects are supported in their use of TEL, and explore new and exciting ways to enrich the curricula with learning technology.</p><p>The successful candidate will work closely with the TEL team, other CLT staff, academic staff and with staff from computing and other services at the University. In particular, they will work closely with other Learning Technologists to ensure that we provide an excellent service in support of our teaching. <p>The Teaching Development Fund (TDF) will once again hold its landmark sandpit event that brings together staff from across the University to develop and launch projects to support learning and teaching, and enhance the student experience.</p>
<p>The sandpit format has become increasingly popular within universities. It gives people time away from other distractions to work intensively on their chosen area. Our TDF sandpit this year will focus on research-engaged learning, and will provide an opportunity to bring together mixed disciplinary teams in a non-hierarchical environment, with an openness to innovation.</p>
<p>Participants will work together to conceive and plan their project over the course of one day, at the end of which participants will pitch their ideas to the TDF panel.</p>
<p>The sandpit will be held on  <strong>Wednesday 9 January 2019</strong> on campus. You will need to be available that day.</p>
<p>If you would like to join us, please complete the <strong>Sandpit Application Form</strong> to be considered for the event. Please note that the <strong>deadline for applications is Friday 14 December 2018</strong>.</p>
<p>Full information about this year's TDF application process, which also includes a written application route, can be found here.</p>
<p>The Teaching Development Fund (TDF) is now in its 19th year. This year, £32,000 is available to support innovative ideas and projects that encourage staff and students to engage with the latest approaches to teaching and assessment, make the best use of campus resources, and meet the needs of future graduates in a rapidly changing society.</p>

<div class="MsoNormal Mandy is an exquisite train wreck. It is a movie that takes forever to do anything, then soaks the screen in torrents of gore. Just when you feel like you’re wasting your time, it provides a shot or a quote or a devastating smile that leaves you flailing. When my friends and I finished the movie, we were in shock not because of the chainsaw fight or the skull crushing, but because of the devastatingly silly final image.</div> <div class=" msonormal="" <br=""></div>

is a retro Grindhouse movie, layered in effects to mimic the feel of trippy, ultraviolent revenge movies of the 70s. There’s a little
<i>Evil Dead</i>, and a little
<i>Hellraiser</i>— actually there’s a lot of Hellraiser; the demonic biker gang look like they’re from Pinhead’s high school class. The fig leaf of a plot is that Nicholas Cage plays a lumberjack with a Metal-head girlfriend. The local cult leader decides he likes that girlfriend, and summons his cult and a local gang of demons to abduct her. Cage must go on a journey for gory revenge without ever once wiping his face.

<div class="MsoNormal The fights are either dimly lit or so intensely lit that you never get a good look at people, which lends to the atmosphere. Everything is soaked in yellow, orange, and red, because this movie thinks fire is badass. There’s an admiration for music above all else (the opening tune is a track by King Crimson), and a slavish devotion to style that would make Quentin Tarantino blush. There’s one conversation in particular over whether Galactus can be your favorite planet that seems particularly Tarantino-like – but that’s because both he and this director love a certain era of cheesy film.</div> <div class=" msonormal="" <br=""></div>
<div class="MsoNormal You're here to anguish through meandering, needless scenes, sometimes that make no explicit sense, in a movie that does not offer any value in studying thematically. You're waiting because on the other side is a ridiculous axe-forging montage. So much effort is put into so little story. It's reminiscent of Drive, but even less is going on. The literal entire first hour of the movie is a slog of a lumberjack pillowtalking with his romantic partner, and a cult leader demanding his cult go kidnap that lover. Mandy is a blood-soaked revenge movie, and it doesn't care that you know. You're going to sit through multiple scenes of a lady with exquisite hair reading trashy novels, and the movie doesn't care if you like it. </div> <div class=" msonormal="" <br=""></div>

if I’d grown up with this sub-genre of films. As it is, I can’t understand why it doesn’t get to its meat sooner. It opens with a quote about listening to rock and roll when you’re dead, but it spends most of its runtime not rocking at all. In its downtime, it feels like a copy of a copy of someone making fun of their own self-indulgence.

It’s premised on the idea that ghosts are being forced off their land and forced into a ghetto. 40,000 haunted corpses still lie underneath the gentrified new city, while their ghosts aren’t allowed to go to where their bodies still lie. This is the material you’d expect a more “serious” comedy to handle. In the current climate you’re going to get more critical buzz for a SadCom (like
<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal; Girls</i>), Dark Comedy (like <i style=" mso-bidi-font-style:="" normal;="" death="" of="" stalin<="">), or skewering safe-to-digest tropes Genre Parody (like <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal; Cabin in the Woods</i>). We’re following a mayor who cares more about painting naked ladies than making policy, and the dorks who work at a pizza parlor built on top of a mass grave, and a group of seemingly moral protestors trying to evict the New Poor who’ve replaced the ghosts just so the rich can swipe the land a second time. You can do your serious movies about this material. A24 easily could. This feels more like Adult Swim than A24.</div> <div class=" msonormal="" <br=""></div>
<div class="MsoNormal Writer/Director Austin Vesely has made something utterly different. By treating these gross evils (and gross metaphors for evil) as quotidian, and focusing on small-minded and petty people, he’s normalized the struggle. The pizza delivery workers are just going through their lives in this unfair and haunted world, hoping they don’t also die and suffer the annoyance of becoming ghosts as well. That marginalization is treated as eye-rollingly frustrating rather than abject terror. That’s the ethos of this gonzo Horror Comedy.</div> <div class=" msonormal="" <br=""></div>

She plays it so earnestly, taking the goofy world at face value and trying to be tough on its own terms. Chance the Rapper and Paul Scheer also give dry and understated performances as people who are utterly bought in to how ridiculous all of this is, and who just want to get by, even if getting by means turning into a werewolf.

The world of academia has tended to brand me as a smart girl. Though… I have also been told that there is quite the distinction between being 'smart' and being 'clever'. Having a baby sure makes you feel like you are not very clever. Let me rephrase that. Having a baby sure makes you feel so completely and utterly clueless.
<p>When I was twelve years old, I took part in a problem-solving competition called 'Tournament of Minds', where small groups of high achieving students from particular districts had to work together for a term to solve one problem. I don't quite remember the problem that was posed to my group… something about aliens, no gravity, magnets and food… And there was a disastrous papier mache' attempt involved somehow. How is this relevant? Well, anytime there is a problem that needs to be solved in my day-to-day life, I say to myself, 'Tournament of Minds, Johanna'. There was a time when some authority figures must have deemed me capable of taking part in such a thing, you see, and so therefore I <i>surely </i>can't be quite as clueless as I feel almost all of the time. One thing I really didn't expect with this whole child-rearing business is the intensity of problem-solving that is required for such a large proportion of the day — problem solving in such a high-stress, adrenalin-ridden situation, often where the person you love more than you thought humanly possible is suffering in some way or another. This is bloody hard.</p>
<p>At the moment, and I presume this is the same for many many many new parents out there, sleep is the holy grail. The seemingly infinite hours that you spend attempting to get your baby to go to sleep are unimaginable. And then, when your little terror is finally sleeping soundly, you simply lay there in bed, a total insomniac, trying to think of the ways that you could get your baby to sleep better in the future. Ridiculous. Without being too melodramatic, I… alrighty, so I will be melodramatic. But it's how I'm feeling. Being melodramatic, I feel like a total and utter failure when it comes to training Ruben to sleep. There are so many different approaches to teaching babies to sleep, and after another week of him waking between eight and twenty times a night, I am at the end of my tether. There is no way, though, that I will attempt the 'cry it out' sleep-training programme, but I feel at a loss. The baby book I have for Ruben has a section for me to fill in 'Eliminated night feeding at ___ weeks". Umm… excuse me? <i>Weeks</i>? I'm expecting a three-digit response to that one.
